Responsive design is the type of design that works smoothly on desktop, tablet or smartphone. So, it is just one design that is coded in a way, that it can suit to the device you are using currently, no matter it’s a PC, tablet or smartphone. It’s great, as sometimes, just because some websites are not designed for all devices, people get irritated and never visit those website again. However, as it is just a one design, it is too difficult for designers to make changes just on one device, without affecting the other ones and that’s where the problems with responsive design begin.

Responsive web can be both powerful and destroying depending on the situation. So, before implementing it you should consider its pros and cons.

  1. One website: If you implement responsive website design, then, you have a one design for many devices. So,it is surely easier to monitor and control one instead of two or three.
  2. One URL: Having one URL simply means that users will get directly to your website without waiting for redirects. In addition, if you have one URL, it will help you in your SEO by accumulating all page traffic rather than collecting traffic from different versions.
  3. Easier SEO: If you have have responsive design, there is no need to create particular content for mobile version, so you can adjust your content for all devices.
  4. Easier marketing efforts: There is no need for your marketing team to develop ads to promote your mobile website.
  5. It’s cheaper: Designing just one website and one code is definitely much cheaper than having several websites.
  6. Easier analytics: It will be easier for your analytics specialists to view the traffic and calculate your productivity if you use responsive website design.

 

Though it seems that there are so many pros, that cons should be ignored, it’s not like that. Responsive web design has some cons that need attention.

 

The Cons

 

  1. Technical inconvenience: Taking into account the fact that responsive design is a new technology, it can be not useful for some people, as there still exist old devices and browsers, for which it will take too long to open the website.
  2. UX(User Experience): By having a responsive design, you want to satisfy the needs of both desktop and mobile users. However you should take into consideration that mobile and desktop are completely different user experiences. So, be attentive to not lose both of your users instead of trying to satisfy them.
  3. Bad content adaptation: Content for mobile versions should be adapted to mobile users and content for desktop versions should be adapted to desktop users. So, having a responsive design won’t let your content to be adapted to each of these devices.
